Swim spas are incredibly versatile and can be used by all age groups and fitness abilities. In general, using a jetted swim spa to exercise is the perfect way to get a great workout and you are probably already aware of the numerous benefits of exercising in the water. As well as helping you with your fitness and weight loss, working out in a swim spa on a regular basis will also increase your quality of life considerably.

If you’re contemplating investing in a small swim spa or you have just purchased one, you will want to ensure that you are getting the most out of your pool. Thankfully, there are so many different exercises that you can easily complete in your swim spa no matter what size it is, so you really can get a full-body workout. Therefore, when you are putting together a workout plan for your swim spa, ensure that you include the following exercises.

Swimming

Starting with the most obvious exercise but by no means the least effective after all, it is what swim spas were originally designed for. Swimming is a great cardio exercise and it is sure to work your whole body. In a swim spa, not only can you swap between various strokes but you can change the speed and currents to adjust your workout to suit your ability. For safety reasons, always start off slow and build up your resistance gradually – alongside your endurance.

Jogging

Your swim spa is the perfect place to walk and jog too, and we always recommend this as a great warm-up. You can either jog in place bringing your knees up as high as possible, or if you want to make things more challenging, turn your jets on and try to run against the current without letting it push you backwards. This is a great cardio workout that will strengthen all of your legs as well as your abdominal muscles.

Cycling

By holding onto the edge of your swim spa, you can imitate the motion of riding a bike for a brilliant lower body workout. Put your back against the wall of the swim spa and hold on to the edge spreading your arms out straight. Facing upwards, bring your legs to just under the surface of the water and move them in a circular motion, just like you’re pedaling a bike. You can slowly increase the amount of time you do this, as you get stronger. You can even purchase a specialist water bike for your swim spa which can be used for exercising.

Weightlifting

There is a wide variety of water weights on the market, ranging in both size and buoyancy. You can use these weights in a similar way to how you would use weights out of the water to perform a range of strengthening aerobic exercises, or you can also use them during your cardio to take the exercise to the next level. It may be worth getting a range of weights so you can use different ones for different exercises.

Step-ups

You can complete this exercise either on the entrance steps or on specially designed aqua fitness steps. Using these steps the same way you would a step box in the gym, simply stepping up and down will provide you with another great lower body exercise. The buoyancy of the water will help you with the initial movement of this exercise, but the final push will really help strengthen your muscles because you will be mostly out of the water.

Investing in a swim spa

As you can see, there are so many different exercises that you can do in your swim spa, all of which will help you to stay fit and healthy. Aqua fitness has developed an unfair reputation for consisting of light cardio exercises only, but there is no denying that you really can get a full-body workout in your swim spa and it is ideal for people of all fitness levels.
