Garden hot tubs are becoming more and more popular and lots of homes up and down the UK are deciding to have one installed. Of course, they can bring hours of fun to any family home but, with this comes responsibility. You can’t just fill your hot tub up and forget about it like you might do a paddling pool in the summer, there is some necessary maintenance that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Ensuring that you and your family are bathing in safe and clean water and that you’re also protecting your spa’s expensive equipment is incredibly important. Thankfully, there are a few things you can do to keep your hot tub clean and to help with standard maintenance, so Hydropool Surrey has put together a list of our top tips.

Always rinse your swimsuits

Ideally, every time you wash your swimsuit you should rinse it thoroughly in plain water before you get into your hot tub wearing it. Almost all swimsuits that have been in a washing machine will have some soap residue on them and this can be bad for your tub. It only takes a small amount of soap to create a foamy mess when the jets are turned on and this foam can be really difficult to remove.

Invest in a hot tub floating dispenser

You will have to use a sanitiser in your hot tub water and you can usually choose between bromine and chlorine. To make things easier for yourself and to ensure that you don’t forget to use the sanitiser, it’s worth investing in a floating dispenser. This dispenser will sit in your hot tub and slowly release the sanitiser at a set rate. Just remember to take this dispenser out before you get into your hot tub and turn the jets on.

Avoid lotions and makeup

Be careful of what you have on your skin when you get into your hot tub. Having moisturiser, fake tan, perfumes or even make up on can quickly turn the water cloudy and affect the chemical balance of the tub. These various lotions can also stain the sides of the hot tub if left uncleaned. To avoid this, make sure that you and your visitors rinse off yourselves before hopping in the hot tub.

Purchase some water test strips

It is important to ensure that you are checking the water in your hot tub regularly to make sure that it is clean and safe. The easiest and quickest way to do this is to use water test strips. All you need to do is dip them into the water and they will instantly indicate the sanitiser, pH and total alkalinity levels of the water accurately. You can then make any chemical adjustments that may be required. Ideally, you should use these strips daily whether the hot tub is in use or not.

Use a pre-filter when you refill

As a garden hot tub owner, you will need to drain, clean and refill your tub every few months. You may find that you’re struggling to maintain the chemical balance in the water and this is a good sign that it is time for a refill. When refilling, you can use something called a ‘pre-filter’, this is essentially a filter that connects to your standard garden hose and it will remove pollutants from the water when you refill the tub, making managing your water quality so much easier.

The tips above can really help when it comes to keeping your hot tub clean. There is no avoiding cleaning your tub but, you can definitely make things easier for yourself.
